EDTP 540 Teaching Adolescent Readers

I think it is very important to recognize that not all students learn the same way. I liked the different types of responses that he allowed from his students. Not all students were able to respond in the same way. Some of the students needed a more artistic approach to reading. This enabled them to feel comfortable with the assignment and to be engaged with it as well. I learn more and more everyday how important it is that students have a choice in their learning. They need to be engaged in their learning and by allowing them the freedom to have choice in what and how they are learning can only enhance their experiences. I find that I learn more when I am engaged and interested in the subject matter that is being taught.

I have to agree wholeheartedly. Students learn best when they have a personal investment in their learning- the trick is getting them to make that investment. And I also think there is a lot to be said for valuing different learning styles and encouraging students to explore different learning styles and processes and discover what works best for them.

I liked the idea of them being able to do the "visual or symbolic protocols" (he should have come up with a better name). I like the idea of options. We still do as adult students so why not provide your students with the options. One of those options may just tempt them to like the content.

I also agree with Hallie. It is extremely important to value all learning differences and to teach to the different learning styles that we will have in our classrooms!

All I can think about is that third grade classroom we were in last year...what if they would have been offered a choice?? Maybe they wouldn't have been so disengaged?!? I definatly agree with you, having a choice can make a huge difference in learning!!!
